Mark’s Story

Mark's Story

Distraught and feeling all alone, Mark called The Center for Women and Families two days after his 18th birthday. He didn’t know where else to turn. His stepfather had been raping him since he was 10 years old, but when he was finally old enough to move out of the house, he feared for the safety of his younger sister.

The Center’s crisis counselor helped Mark understand that his abuse wasn’t his fault. He had tried so many times to tell someone he trusted, but this was the first time that someone had believed him.

Mark was reassured to learn the guilt and shame that he was feeling was not unusual for adult survivors of child sexual assault. Since he was interested in pursuing criminal charges, our crisis counselor connected him with one of our legal advocates to help him file the proper reports and begin the prosecution process.

Mark soon began meeting with a therapist and participating in art therapy groups offered at The Center for Women and Families. His unique journey of healing continued for many months. Now, years after his call that night to our crisis line, Mark identifies himself as a survivor, not a victim. He has completed his college degree, and he looks forward to starting a family of his own.
