KDVA Training Institute Presents: Responding to Abuse of Individuals with Diabilities

9:00 am-4:00 pm March 16 and 17. Individuals with disabilities are among the most likely to be abused and least likely to receive appropriate assistance. This workshop provides a multi-disciplinary overview of critical issues including: dynamics of abuse; strategies pertaining to safety planning and guardianship; and key elements of the Americans with Disabilities Act and Kentucky mandatory reporting laws. THURSDAY IN BLACK: Kentucky
Location: Kentucky
Wear black clothing today as a way to raise awareness about sexual violence and show support for survivors. Thursdays in Black began in the 1970’s by women in Argentina to raise awareness about the alarming number of women in that country who were disappearing and later being found raped and murdered. In subsequent years it has become a world-wide effort with people joining in solidarity in countries such as Israel, Australia, South Africa, Canada and the United States. Read More
New Leaves for New Lives exhibit opens!

Every day at The Center for Women and Families we witness victims of intimate partner violence leaving abuse behind–in essence, they are turning over new leaves to create new lives. As a way to honor and celebrate this, The Center, in conjunction with the University of Louisville, is sponsoring a community art project called New Leaves for New Lives. Artists, survivors and partners will be creating a collection of altered books to be displayed March 25-May 21 2010 in the UofL Ekstrom Library Kain Rare Books Gallery. Read More

DENIM DAY
Location: Kentuckiana
Wear denim today and support survivors of sexual violence! Denim Day is an international activity activity that began in Italy in 1992 when the Italian High Court overturned a rape conviction because the victim was wearing tight jeans. Women of the Italian legislature protested by wearing jeans the next day and the observance of Denim Day worldwide had begun. Folks all over Kentuckiana will be raising awareness in denim today.
